A Word of Thanks: Market Manager Lauren Carey

It's been quite a year! Over 5,500 Facebook fans, 2,296 Twitter fans, 70 vendors, 38 wonderful markets, 35 chef demos, 40 amazing volunteers, two Holiday Artist events, hundreds of dogs and one cat, baby goats, pigs, ponies, the Sunday Supper evening, a Halloween parade, and a Market Mash-Up! This season we saw our Wholesome Wave Program double yet again, processing nearly $30,000 in food stamp benefits at the Market.

We have also seen our farmers struggle with major health issues and the worst weather season in years. All along we have been grateful for your continued support. We are also grateful to our sponsors: Country Financial, Whole Foods, Wholesome Wave. Without the support of our sponsors, our chef demos and the food stamp matching program could never happen.

Peachtree Road Farmers Market is a special place because of the smiling faces we see each weekfarmers, artists, food producers, volunteers, and most importantly you, our customers. We notice when you aren't in your usual chef demo seat, we are excited to meet your new baby, and we love to make you smile as we fill your shopping bags with delicious local foods.

Thank you so much for supporting the 2013 Peachtree Road Farmers Market! We can't wait to see you on April 5 for opening day 2014 as we launch our 8th season!

Sincerely,
Lauren Carey, Market Manager

Two Ryans = One Epic Demo

Chef Demo with
Ryan Hidinger & Ryan Smith
of Staplehouse
10:00 a.m. on 11/9
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
These two Ryans are changing the way Atlanta (and the world) looks at restaurants. As co-chefs and partners for the highly anticipated Staplehouse, set to open in spring 2014, they’re not only creating a neighborhood restaurant focused on locally produced ingredients—they’re also creating a nonprofit that will benefit from the good food they serve at said restaurant. Staplehouse will be a subsidiary of The Giving Kitchen Initiative, an organization they’ve built with partners Jen and Kara Hidinger to assist the Atlanta restaurant industry with unanticipated financial hardship. In their own words, The Giving Kitchen will “help pay excessive medical and other expenses for the people who anonymously and graciously nourish so many of us during our dining experiences and who may find themselves in a time of need.” Hidinger and Smith are perfectly positioned to lead such an effort, since they’re two of our city’s best “nourishers,” Between them they’ve got experience from Bacchanalia (both Ryans), Floataway Café and Muss & Turner’s (Hidinger, who, with his wife Jen, also pioneered the supper club scene in our city), and Canoe, Restaurant Eugene, Holeman & Finch Public House, and Empire State South (Smith). All that’s to say, this is going to be one epic demo, y’all. Don’t miss it.

Oh, you know, opening one of the city’s hottest new restaurants, Gunshow—rolling carts with an ever-changing line-up of deliciousness? Yes, please.

This week at PRFM

Chef Demo by Aaron Russell of Restaurant Eugene, 10:00 a.m.
Live Music by Alex Gordon, Happy Nest Kids Activities, all morning

Chef Demo with Aaron Russell
of Restaurant Eugene
10:00 a.m. on 8/17
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
Aaron Russell, Pastry Chef at Restaurant Eugene, worked his way through culinary school while baking bread at night at Breadgarden, Atlanta's finest bakery at the time. After graduation, he became pastry chef at Nikolai's Roof, the first restaurant in the Southeast to receive 4 Mobil Stars. This led to a position as Assistant Pastry Chef at The Dining Room in the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead, which cemented his career path. While there, he was promoted to become the youngest 5 Mobil Star Pastry Chef in the nation. Aaron then took the position of Pastry Chef at Guenter Seeger's namesake restaurant Seeger's. Chef Seeger's austere approach to local, organic ingredients and simple preparations has held the most influence on Aaron's current style.

In 2008 and 2009, Russell was nominated for "Outstanding Pastry Chef" by the James Beard Foundation while working at The Chocolate Bar. In 2010, Chef Linton Hopkins invited Aaron to take charge of the pastry kitchen at Restaurant Eugene, where Russell has received three more James Beard Award nominations. This Saturday, Chef Russell surprises us with a summer dessert!

Local Nation

Chef Demo
with Peter Dale of The National
10:00 a.m. on 8/10
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
Y'all know Hugh Acheson. Meet Hugh's executive chef from his Athens restaurant The National—Peter Dale. No, really, you should come meet him this Saturday. A UGA grad, Peter pursued his culinary passion shortly after college. With family heritage from Ecuador and Greece, he had experienced an array of cuisines and was ready to get his start in the field. He began as an apprentice at Hugh's Five & Ten restaurant, with plans to attend culinary school thereafter. Instead, he chose travel as his education and spent time in Europe (mostly Spain) where he found further inspiration and honed his skills. In 2007, Dale and Hugh opened The National, combining their interests in cooking, travel, and food politics. The daily-changing menu features ingredients from local farms and pairs the seasons of Georgia with the flavors of Spain, France, North Africa, Greece, the eastern Mediterranean, and the Middle East. This weekend you don't have to travel around the world, or even to Athens, to get a taste for Peter's fantastic dishes—you just have to stop by PRFM!

Digging In

Chef Demo with Hilary White
of The Hil at Serenbe
10:00 a.m. on 8/3

Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
Chef Hilary talks the talk and walks the walk, y’all. Having grown up around the rural farmland of Ohio, she was drawn to the Serenbe community and its ethos of sustainability when picking the location of her namesake restaurant, The Hil. Before that, she had built her knowledge and experience traveling the globe, earning a degree from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, and working her way up as the Buckhead Life Restaurant Group’s first female executive chef. But the farmland called in 2007, and Chef Hilary opened The Hil at Serenbe with her husband, Jim, and her mother, Sandy Pitsch, at her side. She spends time tending the farm and growing produce, using the fruits of her labor to create comforting dishes worth the short drive to Serenbe. The critics love her (she’s been lauded by the likes of Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, and The New York Times) and her community does, too (she’s involved with Les Dames d’Escoffier, Southern Foodways Alliance, Georgia Grown, Share Our Strength, and Wholesome Wave). When she’s not spending her spare time volunteering or mentoring young chefs, you can find Chef Hilary exploring the roads on her Harley. Or, we might recommend spotting her at PRFM this Saturday, where she’ll show us how to make some quick and delicious fridge pickles.

AgSouth AgAware Day at PRFM
August 3 from 8:30 a.m. to noon
Join us on Saturday, when AgSouth Farm Credit will dedicate a picnic bench to PRFM volunteers, build a raised flower bed and herb garden for the Market, and host the “Ag Experience” for youth and their families—kids will learn what it takes to farm, including getting money from the bank, buying seeds, planting, harvesting, and selling. Then they’ll use the “profits” to play games!

Chef Demo with Todd Richards
of The Shed at Glenwood
10:00 a.m. on 7/27
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
Check out last year’s love letter to Iron Chef and Today alum Chef Todd Richards. He’s still throwing down at The Shed, with a new fried chicken night for the people, and has some exciting plans in the works for Atlantic Station—there, he and The Shed owner Cindy Shera will open the Pig and the Pearl in January 2014. We can’t wait for the smokehouse’s offerings: locally sourced meats and fish, a raw bar with fresh oysters, and of course a cool cocktail menu. In the meantime, visit Chef Todd under our demo tent this Saturday (and at The Shed anytime). P.S. look out for the COUNTRY Financial folks handing out PRFM bags—they’ll also have a chance for you to win a Shed gift certificate!

Tomato Time

A rainy summer means a shorter tomato season, but fear not! Gather up summer’s juiciest fruit and can and freeze your way to a happy winter. You’ll also want to check out Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival founder Chef Ford Fry in the demo tent, and get inspired by the sounds of Irish Traditions music wafting about this week’s market.

Chef Demo with Ford Fry
of Rocket Farm Restaurants
10:00 a.m. on 7/20

For our homage to Ford Fry, one of Atlanta’s culinary giants, click here. Since we saw Ford under the demo tents last year, he’s added Buckhead’s newest hotspot King + Duke and Westside smash-hit The Optimist and Oyster Bar to his roster which also includes JCT. Kitchen & Bar and No. 246. Dedicated to using local products and making each of his restaurants a community gathering place, Ford is tireless in his creativity and reach. That’s why we’re not surprised at how many more projects he’s got in the works: the just-launched People’s food truck (benefiting non-profit City of Refuge), this fall’s St. Cecilia (Mediterranean in the former Bluepointe spot), and new concepts in Inman Park’s Krog Street Market and Alpharetta’s Avalon development next year. He’s also founder of one of Atlanta’s most scary-good events, The JCT. Kitchen & Bar Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival (benefiting Georgia Organics). Be sure and ask him about the annual fest happening this Sunday—we hear tell of a chef/bartender/celeb dunk tank.

Summer’s Peak

Chef Demo with Drew Belline
of No. 246 – 10:00 a.m. on 7/13
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
Chef Drew Belline isn’t just the executive chef and partner (with Ford Fry) at Decatur’s favorite Italian-inspired hotspot, No. 246. And he isn’t just a critically lauded chef who's worked with the likes of Charlie Palmer, Tom Colicchio, and team Anne Quatrano and Clifford Harrison. But he's also got some pretty cool hobbies: fly fishing and foraging for mushrooms. So it’s no surprise that Belline is an avid believer in using local products at their peak, and his food is a showcase of these ingredients; these ingredients plus a pretty sweet wood-fired oven. What else is pretty sweet? The demo he’s got planned for Saturday, of course.

Summer, from scratch

Chef Demo with
Suzanne Vizethann
of Buttermilk Kitchen
10:00 a.m. on 7/6
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
You might remember Chef Suzanne from her catering business The Hungry Peach or from her big win on Food Network’s CHOPPED. But if you haven’t stopped by her most recent success story, new restaurant Buttermilk Kitchen, what are you waiting for? There, Suzanne combines her experience working with some of Atlanta’s most creative chefs (Richard Blais and Eli Kirshtein) with her appreciation of time-honored techniques to bring us breakfast and lunch all made from scratch. She uses sustainable, local ingredients, and her fried chicken nights are not to be missed—we can safely say the same for this Saturday’s demo—don’t miss it, y’all!

One Juicy Market

Chef Demo with Brent Banda
of La Tavola – 10:00 a.m. on 6/29
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
There’s no time like tomato season to welcome a chef with Italian skills—like La Tavola’s Brent Banda, maybe. Before joining the Fifth Group Restaurants team in 2004, Banda honed his skills at some of NYC’s best joints (Maialino, Esca, and Hearth). We’re glad his talents are back home in Atlanta, where he can share his fresh, seasonal dishes (and a few tips and tricks, too)—be sure to ask him about La Tavola’s annual Tomatofeast, and find out why the red fruit is nicknamed the “apple of love.”

CrossFit Market Challenge
Join us this Saturday for a jumpstart to your workout—15 minutes of pure CrossFit, exercise that’s sure to get you bikini-ready. Just $5 gets you the feel-good energy of a kick-butt morning routine plus the feel-good energy of doing, well, good—all the proceeds benefit Wholesome Wave, the folks who double SNAP benefits (food stamps) at local farmers markets. Also, giant tire flipping.

It’s a PRFM Weekend!

Chef Demo with E.J. Hodgkinson
of JCT. Kitchen & Bar
10:00 a.m. on 6/22
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
Check out our chef demo this Saturday for one of Atlanta’s hot chef “young guns,” so you can say you followed his rise to fame from the beginning. Hyperbole? Nope, the hype is true, y’all. You’ll remember E.J. from his time at Woodfire Grill, but before that he crisscrossed the country perfecting his skills at luxury resorts, cafés, and the Texas Culinary Academy, Le Cordon Bleu. And even before that, his love for all things local started at the kitchen table with his mother and grandmother’s meals made from their own garden ingredients. Plus (and it is a plus), he’s from California, where fresh food is a way of life. We’re glad he’s brought that way of life, and the good hype that goes with it, to Atlanta. Don’t miss chatting with him this weekend—he’s one to watch—and maybe visit him on Sunday, too, at our Sunday Supper! (photo by Richie Arpino)

All of the evening’s proceeds will support PRFM’s Wholesome Wave Program that doubles food stamp and EBT benefits. Tickets are $100 and are available at Peachtree Road Farmers Market.

Father Knows Best

This week at PRFM…
Father’s Day weekend is upon us. PRFM is your one-stop-shop for pop—pick up all his faves, like bacon, pasta, sweet treats, and (well) pops, maybe? Also, The Homestead will be on hand to help the kids make a Father’s Day card with seed-paper—something dad can read then plant to grow flowers in the garden!

Chef Demo with Jeb Aldrich
of 4th & Swift – 10:00 a.m. on 6/15
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
Like father, like son? If we're talking about two of our city's best chef talents...then, yes. Not only is Jeb Aldrich the chef de cuisine at 4th & Swift, he happens to be the son of its executive chef and owner Jay Swift. And though cooking might be in the blood, Jeb's also got proven sweat (we can't speak to the tears) in the game: classically trained at Johnson & Wales, stints at Charleston’s Peninsula Grill, Atlanta’s Rainwater, Canoe, and much-lauded Joël, and work in Austria and Italy, to be exact. Four years ago he joined his dad at 4th & Swift to create seasonal menus from the highest quality ingredients. Stop by the demo tent this Saturday to enjoy chef Jeb's recipe featuring chicken in honor of Pastured Poultry Week! It’ll be almost like sitting on 4th & Swift’s new patio, only with a few more friends and farmers around. (photo by Our Labor of Love)

We love Chef Ron’s unique take on what it means to eat local, and we know from experience that he makes preparing the season’s best a whole lot of fun. Ask him about his new restaurants in the works—a pizza joint for Morningside and a diner for Atlantic Station. Or maybe ask about Rosebud’s new weekday brunch menu. of Local Three
10:00 a.m. on 6/1
Chef Demos are sponsored by

By now, you must know how we feel about Local Three. If you’ll pardon the pun, that goes double for the bar program there. Mixologist Kevin Ryan is so good that folks trust him to come up with a drink based on what they like or how they’re feeling. But that’s not to say that the carefully crafted beverage menu isn’t also worth considering—it features more than 40 bourbons, 100 beers, and 100 wines, plus a cocktail list that frequently changes based on the season’s freshest ingredients. Don’t be shy—drop by the demo tent this Saturday to gather a few drink tips from Local Three’s “Beverage Dude,” aka "Medicine Man." We’re pretty sure he’s got a refreshing cure for whatever ails you.

Relish Spring, Tempt Summer

Stop by the Market for all of your cook-out goodies—from hot dogs to buns, fruits to veggies—and don’t forget dessert (we know that’s not like you). PRFM has everything you need for a long weekend of impressively delicious local fare.

Chef Demo with Adam Waller
of Bocado – 10:00 a.m. on 5/25
Chef Demos are sponsored by
COUNTRY Financial
It’s not just about the burger, y’all. Ok, the Bocado burger is spectacular. But the Westside favorite now helmed by chef Adam Waller also offers smart cocktails and a creative lunch and dinner menu that rotates seasonally (love that). Chef Adam is no stranger to highlighting the delicious and fresh—he came to Bocado from sister restaurant STG Trattoria and from Sotto Sotto before that. Check out the demo tent this Saturday, where Adam will show you how best to celebrate market ingredients—and maybe he’ll even throw a burger tip or trick your way, just in time for cookout season.

Kids’ Corner
8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
PRFM is partnering with Elite Metro Sitters to provide child care during the May 25 market. Elite sitters are insured, background-checked and CPR-certified, plus they’ll have some pretty fun crafts for your toddler to enjoy while you shop the market! Kids’ Corner is suitable for children ages two and up.
